How LUKS Password Recovery Works
- Upload just the LUKS header (first part of the disk — not your full data)
- We identify the exact cipher, hash, and key slot configuration used
- Choose dictionary or mask attack based on what you remember
- Pay the small start fee and monitor progress
- If successful, pay the reveal fee to unlock your passphrase
LUKS1 Support
We currently support LUKS version 1 volumes, covering a range of cipher, hash, and mode combinations (AES, Serpent, Twofish with various hash algorithms). LUKS2 support — the newer default format — is in development.
Why Password Hints Matter So Much
Like other disk encryption formats, LUKS uses deliberately slow key derivation to resist brute-force attacks. This is good security design, but it means recovery is most successful when you remember part of your passphrase.
Tips to Improve Success Rate
- Not sure if your disk is LUKS1 or LUKS2? We'll tell you after you upload — LUKS2 headers are currently not supported
- Remember any part of your passphrase? Use the mask attack builder
- Try dictionary attacks first for passwords you may have set yourself
- Provide the approximate passphrase length if known
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you support LUKS2?
Not yet. We currently support LUKS1 volumes only. If your disk uses LUKS2 (the modern default in most Linux distributions), we'll let you know immediately after upload rather than making you wait.
Do I need to upload my whole disk?
No. We only need the LUKS header — a small portion at the start of the encrypted volume. Your actual data stays on your device.
How long does LUKS recovery take?
This depends on the cipher and hash used, and how much of the passphrase you remember. Typically minutes to a couple of hours per attempt.
Is this legal to use?
Yes, for your own disks or disks you have explicit permission to access. Our terms require you to only submit files you're authorized to recover.
